It probably goes without saying that CONTENT is the single most important aspect to your website. After all, why even have a website (or a business, for that matter) if you don’t have anything to say?
In addition to your visitors having a great experience, your content is also what makes search engines like Google and Bing able to find your site so that new users can read it. Fortunately, the technology behind these major search engines has evolved over the years to focus more on the quality of your content than on how many times you focus on the same keyword.
So how do these search engines determine what is quality content and what isn’t? Preferential treatment of the best digital reputations. Digital reputations are determined by three key factors.
- Sharing – The more people that share your site, the better the search engines assume it to be. People sharing your site via social media or direct link URLs
pushes your site to the front of the line for search engine ranking. Remember that people only share sites that have EXCELLENT CONTENT! - Trustworthiness – This is where choosing a reputable domain provider comes
in to critical play. Pricing may vary from service to service but, just like your web design and development services, you get what you pay for with a hosting service. The more domain authority that your service provider has, the more reliable your site will be deemed. My highest recommendation for your web hosting service is BlueHost. They offer very competitive pricing and, more importantly, outstanding domain authority in search engine algorithms. - Detail & Accuracy – While it is not necessary, (or even a good idea) to fill your homepage with exhaustive amounts of text, your website as a whole should cover the entirety of your topic to get picked up my search engines. This is where your sub-pages can be the real heroes. Pages such as ‘About’, ‘Services’, ‘Resources’, ‘Pricing’ are a great place to store detailed explanations of what you do and what you offer. Because these pages have to be clicked on by your users, it is a safe to say that your home or landing page has done its job and captured an interested visitor!
Website beauty is NOT skin deep.
Think of your website as a hitchhiker standing on the shoulder of the information superhighway. Its always standing on the side of the road with its thumb in the air trying to catch a lift to the top of the Google search results page. Search engine crawlers are the cars that are always on the road seeking passengers, and they will pick your site up if your sign is big enough. The thing about these crawlers is, they’re anything but superficial. They don’t care if your site is sexy, well-dressed, and has the biggest design budget on the block. To the crawlers, its what on the inside that counts. Down-to-earth, wholesome values like title tags, meta descriptions, internal and external links, related keywords, and images with relevant alt tags. These values may seem Greek to you, but that’s ok! Any competent web designer or developer can ensure these key elements are a part of your site!
